Volvo Gas Turbine Bus/Coach

The Volvo concept coach/bus is their vision of future public transport. Power comes from a gas-turbine engine which runs at constant speed for maximum effiency. The turbine generates electricity to power the batteries which in turn drive the wheels. The benefit of this system is that the turbine can be turned off in emmision controlled areas using battery reserves for power.

The only problem with this technology is the considerable cost involved in development, production, set-up and maintenance. It will probably take some strong legislation to force public transport companies and organisations to pursue vehicles like this but eventually it will happen, at least in Europe. Aside from the dramatic technology involved in this vehicle, the actual form and styling are almost wholy practicable. Flush-fitting windows and panels are already standard practice in coachbuilding and it it easy to see how styling touches like the seats and exterior lights can be incorporated in contemporary vehicles.
