The Seat Formula

The Formula is SEAT's vision of an affordable sporty coupé for the future. Designed at SEAT's 'Design Centre Europe' based in Barcelona, the Formula is practicably producable. The car is aimed at the Lotus Elise and Z3 market in which the Volkswagen Audi Group is only represented by the Audi TT.

Built on an extruded aluminium chassis, the car is unique in the way that few or no components have been taken from the Volkswagen bin. This especially applies to the prototype 2-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine.

Clean metallic structures keep the interior simple and reflect the desire of many contemporary designers to make use of newer materials that have both aesthetic and functional benefits over traditional materials. Standard plastics are kept to a minimum; instead the dash is made of clear resin whilst much of the cabin uses aluminium or synthesised metallic finishes. Despite the car's unique nature, the designers say that every component can be practically mass produced.

The Formula's exterior exudes a similar feel to the Audi TT in so much as the car's overall form is smooth whilst the shape of the lights and the boldness of the panel lines create a greater quantity of detailing.

Unfortunately the Formula looks like it will not see production. The Volkswagen group decided that the market was heavily contested and that the Formula would not be sufficiently profitable. That a car like this will be lost to history is a shame but hopefully it's design influence will be felt in future production cars.
