Renault

Within Europe, there aren't many companies that rival Renault in terms of linking concepts to production. In the last few years, Renault has spawned concept cars that will form the basis for mass-produced consumer vehicles. The latest incarnation of the Renault Clio, for example, combines the heritage of its predecessor with the styling cues of the 'Next' concept.

A very significant development, both for Renault and car design as a whole is the decision to produce the 'Avantime' concept. It's styling is unique and it is rare that a concept like this aimed at the family buyer goes to production. The Avantime has been compared to the grand tourers of the '30s and will offer luxury transport for four people. The concept "is 95 per cent of the way toward the production model" and is closely related to the Espace people carrier.

The design theme outlined in the Avantime is set to be continued through the future range. The high vertical, curved rear window is to be a key element. However, it remains to be seen just how closely the designers' ideas will influence the production models.

In the meantime, Renault appears to have a strong global presence, particularly with it's controlling share of Nissan and Samsung Motors as well as major alliances in the truck industry.

With the general climate of increased efficiencies, reduction of over-production and shared development costs, we can expect to see similar behaviour to other companies such as VAG and Ford. This will mean shared platforms and mechanicals, moving production to more cost effective areas and developing strong brand identities to compensate for similarities.
