Materials and Methods used in Transport Design Illustration

Welcome to the materials and methods section. I don't profess to be a particularly good illustrator but what I do know is stated here.

Almost unique to transport design, there are a series of drawing processes that are standard for ideas and final renderings. Almost everyone uses three basic types of materials to produce the sort of sketches and renderings you will typically see; Biro [ball point pen], marker [artists' graphic markers] and chalk.

Biro is used to sketch out ideas. It is used because it is quick, quite clean and unlike pencils does not require sharpening. The only real problem with Biro is that it requires the user to keep the lines clean - it can be difficult to get the desired effect if you have a very sketchy drawing style. However, once you have grasped this, it will be quicker to sketch and visulaise your ideas.

Markers are the obvious designer's tool. Artists' markers are usually alcohol based and are designed to make it easy to colour areas of paper with pure, flat colour. Again, they require practice to get the desired effect but are generally very effective for this type of illustation. The only major problem with markers is their expense. Big design companies will not have a problem but individuals may find them quite expensive.

Chalk is used to provide smooth gradient of colour or tone. Typically, coloured chalk is used in dust form and applied with cotton wool, or similar, to create the effects of glass or light and dark on the bodywork.

There are many variations of methods but these are probably the most common.

Where to get materials...

It can be very difficult to find decent, good value materials so I have spent some time looking on the internet.
WholesaleArt.com
Wholesale Art appears to be the cheapest place on the internet to get decent materials. The markers are certainly the cheapest I have seen.
